Transmitting Awareness of

THE NOW

In pursuit of equanimity

A decade long project inspired by how animals live, Aboriginal dream painting, buddhist practices & 20th century painters

On a 2011 trip to Israel, struck by the paintings of Israeli painter Tal Mazliach at ‘The Concept Has Gone for a Walk’ exhibition in Tel Aviv, I began to explore Aborginal dream painting.

In 2013, considering a career change, I trained as a Swiss chocolatier. A particular tool I used to embelish molten chocolate marked the definite beginning of this direction — along with the cat who adopted me in 2012. Whilst playing with him and observing his antics I couldn’t help comprehend his view of the world. What do I imagine he sees…?

Struck by my cat Mo’s ability to live in THE NOW, it's parallel to my buddhist practice beginning not long before (and a developing interest in graphic novels), I married them together. Three rules for drawing surfaced:

1. Draw with conviction — therefore pen only (I previously only used pencil)

2. Still the mind and follow the pen (there is no subject, only process. A successful outcome is following the process)

3. Each drawing must be completed in one sitting however long it takes

Hence my 2015 mantra, “Capture fast, texture moments, fragment moments”.

Then, following the 2017 Fahrelnissa Zeid show at Tate Modern London, I broke through to the path I’m following now. In 2018 the mantra transformed to, “Draw like Murakami, paint like Zweig”.
